The course is designed to introduce students to Spanish and Spanish literature of the 19th and 20th centuries: chronology, authors, works.

Romanticism: term definition; poetry, short prose, theatre; beginnings of Spanish American literature.
Modernism in Spanish American literature, and its general importance.
Realism and Naturalism: definition of the terms, the flourishing of the novel in Spanish literature.
20th century in Spanish literature: Spain between 1900 and 1939; literary generations from the beginning of the century to the Civil War; development and specifics of the post-war literature until 1975; prose, poetry, theatre; literature after 1975 – postmodernism, tendencies in prose, theatre and poetry.
20th century in Spanish American literature: flourishing of short prose and novel; poetry; Avant-garde's influence; Magic realism; the boom of Spanish American literature; postboom.
21st century: contemporary tendencies in Spanish and Spanish American literature.
