Content

The basic topic of the course is philosophy of logic as developed within the tradition of analytical philosophy. Within this framework, the course provides a philosophical grounding of the content and scope of sentences, proper names, predicates, and treats conceptual complexes relating to the following topics: existence, descriptions and identity, analytic/synthetic, necessity/possibility, nominalism/realism. The course presents the classical (Fregean-Russellian) propositional and predicate logic, its Wittgensteinian variant and the extensions of classical logic (alethic modal logic in Leibnizian and Kripkean style, deontic as well as temporal logics and higher-order logics) and non-classical logics (free logics, multiple-valued, fuzzy, intuitional logics and logic of relevance). The course presents students with the basic tenets of logicism, logical atomism, logical positivism, naturalism, semantics and metaphysics of possible worlds. Authors: Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, Carnap, Quine and Kripke.
