Cultures of Latin America

The introductory part, in which some key features of precolonial, colonial and postcolonial period in Latin America will be presented, is followed by an analysis of some modern anthropological theories and concepts dealing with current problems of Latin America. The course will consist on various thematic fields, focusing on different regions, countries and themes:

Chile, Argentina: indigenous populations, political and territorial issues.
Brazil: marginalized communities and environmental issues.
Mexico, Argentina: new social movements and issues of neocolonialism.
Chile, Mexico: traditional medicine and the role of traditional healers in the intercultural healthcare institutions.
