Introduction to scansion and versification with an overview of the literary periods, authors and selected works of British poetry between the 16th and 19th centuries. Students read and interpret individual poetic works in order to understand the main stages of the development of the English poetic expression from the Elizabethan Age to the Romantic Period, while also becoming acquainted with British society, history, political and economic characteristics of the periods addressed. The course focuses on the study of prosody and formal elements of poetry, in particular its structural principles, metrical and syntactical rhythm, sound and rhyme, stanzaic organization and the use of figurative language.
