Introduction to the Etymological Method and the Study of Sources

Students are first introduced to the concepts and technical terms used in etymology. Then they familiarize themselves with the multi-layered and interdisciplinary issues using selected examples from Indo-European languages, focusing on examples from the languages that students get to know more closely over the course of their program, and on examples from Slovenian. The emphasis is on the etymological analysis of words created as part of continuous linguistic development, in which the basic etymological tool used is the comparative method and exact reconstruction based on this. Students learn the basics of philology, a discipline that studies older linguistic sources.
They also learn about the most basic principles of adopting words and forming calques, and the etymological approach to idioms and onomastic issues.
