The course covers four main themes. The first theme is the regional geography of the United States: the diversity of the nation is examined by looking at its cultural regions. The second theme is concerned with the exploration of American identities through the topics of immigration and minorities. The third theme provides an overview of the key institutions pertaining to politics, the legal system and the economy in the United States. The fourth theme focuses on the values that shape the US society and culture through education, religion, the media, the arts and sports.
